5 Signs You Need a Water Heater Replacement, Not Just a Repair
Most water heaters give you warning signs before they fail completely. The trick is knowing which signs mean "call for a repair" and which mean "start planning for a replacement."
1. It's past 8-10 years old
Most tank water heaters last somewhere in that range. Once you're past it, a repair is often just delaying a replacement that's coming anyway — and an old tank is more likely to fail suddenly, usually at the worst possible time.
2. The water looks rusty or metallic-tasting
That's usually the tank itself corroding from the inside, not the plumbing feeding it. A repair can't fix a rusting tank — once it starts, replacement is the only real fix.
3. You hear rumbling or popping sounds
Sediment builds up at the bottom of the tank over years of use. It can cause popping or rumbling as the unit heats, and it makes the heater work harder to do the same job. Sometimes a flush helps; often it's a sign the tank's nearing the end of its life.
4. You've had more than one repair in the last year or two
If you're already calling for repairs regularly, the math usually favors a replacement — especially once you factor in a new unit's efficiency and warranty against another round of repair bills.
5. You see any moisture or pooling at the base of the tank
This is usually a sign the tank itself is cracked or failing, not a fitting that can be tightened. It's also the one sign on this list that can turn into water damage fast — worth a same-day call, not a wait-and-see.
